Forward Head Posture

When your head drifts forward of your shoulders, it places enormous stress on your spine and surrounding muscles. Corrective chiropractic care can restore proper alignment and relieve the pain that comes with it.

What Is Forward Head Posture?

Forward head posture (FHP) occurs when the head is positioned in front of the body's center of gravity rather than directly over the shoulders. In a healthy posture, the ears should align vertically with the shoulders. With forward head posture, the head can drift anywhere from one to several inches forward of this ideal alignment.

The mechanical consequences of this shift are significant. For every inch the head moves forward, the effective weight on the cervical spine increases by roughly 10 pounds. A typical adult head weighs 10–12 pounds in a neutral position — but shift it just two inches forward and the neck and upper back must manage the equivalent of 30 pounds of force. Over hours, days, and years, this overloads muscles, compresses joints, and reshapes the cervical curve.

Forward head posture is one of the most common postural deviations seen in modern adults. The rise of desk work, smartphones, and sedentary lifestyles has made it nearly epidemic. It's sometimes called "text neck" or "tech neck," though forward head posture is the underlying structural problem that those patterns create.

The good news is that forward head posture is not permanent. The spine is adaptable, and with consistent corrective chiropractic care — including targeted spinal adjustments, traction, and postural retraining — most patients can achieve meaningful improvement in head position and a significant reduction in symptoms.

Common Symptoms

Chronic Neck Pain

Persistent aching or stiffness in the neck and upper cervical spine, often worse after prolonged sitting or screen use. The muscles at the back of the neck become chronically overloaded trying to hold the head up against gravity.

Tension Headaches

Headaches that radiate from the base of the skull upward, often felt as a tight band around the head. These are frequently caused by suboccipital muscle tension and compression of nerves at the top of the cervical spine.

Upper Back and Shoulder Pain

As the head moves forward, the upper trapezius, rhomboids, and shoulder stabilizers must compensate. This leads to knots, trigger points, and a general sense of tightness and fatigue across the upper back and between the shoulder blades.

Reduced Neck Range of Motion

Difficulty turning the head fully left or right, or looking up without discomfort. Joint compression and muscle tightness associated with FHP gradually restrict normal cervical mobility, making everyday movements feel stiff and limited.

Jaw Pain and TMJ Issues

The position of the head directly affects jaw alignment. Forward head posture alters the resting position of the mandible and can contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, clicking, and facial pain.

Fatigue and Brain Fog

Holding the head forward requires constant muscular effort, which is tiring. Additionally, compression in the upper cervical spine can affect blood flow and nerve signaling, contributing to low energy, difficulty concentrating, and a general sense of mental heaviness.

What Causes Forward Head Posture?

Forward head posture rarely develops overnight. It's the result of repeated postural habits and environmental factors that gradually pull the head out of alignment. Understanding the root causes is the first step toward correcting it.

How Corrective Chiropractic Helps

Unlike symptom-focused care that simply manages pain, corrective chiropractic targets the structural cause of forward head posture — restoring the natural cervical curve, improving spinal alignment, and retraining the musculature to hold the head in a healthy position. Treatment is progressive and evidence-based.

Cervical Spinal Adjustments

Gentle, precise chiropractic adjustments restore proper joint motion to the segments of the cervical spine that have become restricted or misaligned. This relieves joint compression, reduces nerve irritation, and creates the foundation for the spine to return to a healthier position over time.

Cervical Traction and Curve Restoration

Specialized traction techniques are used to gently encourage the restoration of the cervical lordosis — the natural inward curve of the neck that is typically flattened or reversed in forward head posture. This process, done consistently over weeks, creates lasting structural change in the spine.

Postural Retraining and Corrective Exercises

We pair in-office care with targeted exercises designed to strengthen the deep neck flexors and retrain the postural muscles to hold the head in proper alignment. These exercises accelerate progress and help prevent the posture from reverting once care is complete.

Ergonomic and Lifestyle Guidance

We help you identify the daily habits and workspace factors that contributed to your forward head posture in the first place. Small changes to monitor height, phone habits, pillow position, and sitting posture compound significantly over time and are essential to maintaining the improvements made in care.
